The song mends our broken hearts after reading Psalm 22, though that psalm is an important part of God’s message to us.  It’s a true saying:  “No cross, no crown!”

The Christian considers it an honour to be a partner with Christ in his suffering.  But afterwards it is most sweet to “rest in fields of green grass,” to be led to “streams of peaceful waters,” when Jesus our shepherd leads us and refreshes our lives (v.3).  Finally, comes the glad promise:  “I will live forever in your house” (v.6).

Psalm 23:1-6

The Good Shepherd...

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me to lie down in green pastures:  he leaded me beside the still waters.  He restored my soul:  he guided me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me:  thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.  Thou prepare a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:  thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:  and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
