Mark 1:21-28

How did Jesus do this wonderful work? The people who saw it wondered that too. Did Jesus practice some kind of magic art? No, Jesus’ authority over the spirit world came from the reality of who he was. Though living in human flesh on earth, Jesus, as the son of God, was the One who commanded life to be in the beginning of all things. As Creator of all, he could compel all to obey his commands—including those who, like this spirit, were in rebellion against him. Through Jesus you, too, can be free from domination by Satan and his invisible spirit-army of followers.

A Man with an Evil Spirit
(See also Luke 4:31-37)

Jesus and his disciples went to the town of Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. Suddenly there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
Jesus told the evil spirit, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
Everyone was completely surprised, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
